Police and security firms disrupt XCPE backdoor behind botnet of 1.3 million Android TV boxes
A coalition of security firms working with Japan's National Police Agency has disrupted XCPE, a backdoor pre-installed in firmware by Shenzhen hardware maker Videostrong Technology. It formed a botnet of over 1.3 million Android devices that operators used as proxies, and the coalition has also taken down command-and-control domains used by affiliate modules, which Google estimates could sever access to at least 10 million more compromised devices. Google has cut ties with Videostrong and banned it from shipping devices with preloaded Google apps.

Google's Threat Intelligence Group disrupted XCPE, a backdoor in the firmware of Android TV set-top boxes, by shutting down its servers and banning the operator. The group attributes the operation with high confidence to Videostrong Technology, the manufacturer of many affected boxes, and more than 1.3 million devices were enrolled. According to the article, the company sold access to criminal affiliates, who used it to push their own activity.

Google and industry partners dismantled the XCPE botnet of more than 1.3 million Android TV boxes after its servers lost control in late October. Google says it is highly confident that manufacturer Videostrong intentionally installed a backdoor and sold access to criminals, who used the devices for ad fraud and residential proxy traffic. Google has banned the TV box maker.
