Vizio and Samsung smart TVs appear to keep sending viewing data after users opt out
Researchers at Northeastern University tested twelve smart TVs from ten manufacturers and found that Automatic Content Recognition (ACR) traffic continued after opt-out on some devices. Vizio kept sending traffic for its first-party and antenna viewing, and Samsung's Tizen OS sent ACR-like traffic for third-party streaming apps and HDMI sessions. LG WebOS, Sony Google TV OS, Amazon FireTV OS and Supersonic VIDAA OS went silent after opt-out, although VIDAA sent unencrypted data.
Study finds TV viewing-tracking opt-outs work for most brands but not all
Researchers at Northeastern University tested 12 TVs from 10 manufacturers to see whether opting out of automatic content recognition (ACR) stops viewing data collection. The opt-out worked for most models, including LG, Amazon Fire TV, a Sony Bravia running Google TV, and Vidaa OS sets from Hisense, Toshiba and Supersonic. Samsung and Roku kept sending some data, and Walmart's Vizio TV kept tracking as if the opt-out had not happened.
