Sandia National Laboratories researchers combined two existing simulation codes, ALEGRA and SPARTA, so that each handles the part it is best suited to. The combined approach is reported as more than 1,600 times faster than earlier methods and allows irregular asteroid shapes to be modelled. Tests on Golevka, Bennu and Itokawa found velocity changes varying up to fivefold depending on which side faced the X-ray source.
